GOOD LIFE is a neon work in which the letter F is deliberately left unilluminated. By creating this apparent glitch in the sign – in which one of the key letters appears not to be working properly – the promise of a ‘good life’ becomes in reality a ‘good lie’. The work continues a strand of my practice concerned with language, in which I playfully manipulate or alter certain phrases and words, turning their meaning into its opposite, or exposing the absurdities and paradoxes or their statements. Related to GOOD LIFE is a work titled EVERYTHING – a series of text drawings previously presented at artissima in 2011 – in which the printed phrase in the form of an instruction, saying FORGET EVERYTHING, is repeatedly traced by hand in the form of a watercolor drawing, but dropping off the last letter in the word FORGET, thus turning it into FORGE. An imperative to forget everything is thus transformed into an imperative to alter, reinvent and re-imagine everything, to fake it or create it anew from the remnants of our imperfect memories.
