Part of the project La Villa Baizeau à Carthage de Le Corbusier et Jeanneret, organized by LA BOÎTE | Centre d’art contemporain
The installation repeats and amplifies a dominant element of the gallery’s architecture, constructing a sequence of arches using bent steel printing plates, held in place with stones. Positioned across the central area of the former cathedral, the work forms a barrier of sorts, thwarting easy access inside. Rows of curved plates additionally evoke waves, speaking to the proximity of the Mediterranean sea just outside the gallery’s walls. The printing plates, sourced from two of Tunisia’s leading Arabic and French-language newspapers are covered in ink and newsprint – remnants of print production and of “yesterday’s news” still legible on their surface.
