Views (Remembered) comprises a series of texts, each summoning from memory the view out the window at Horvat’s five previous places of residence, in Cakovec (Croatia), Chicago, Brooklyn and London. Speaking to the street and the passerbys, and explicitly addressing the relation between the inside and the outside, between looking out and looking in, between memory and perception, the work approaches the window as not only the substrate carrying the text but also as its subject. The five texts stage a dialogue between multiple cities, between the past and the present, between what was and what is. Contrasting descriptions of remembered views with the one they are seeing in the space they occupy, the viewers/readers are invited to imagine other streets superimposed on the one they are standing in outside PUBLICS space in Helsinki.
Views (Remembered) was the tenth commission for the Eurantie Window Publication, an experimental spatial publication edited by Maarit Mustonen and Arja Karhumaa in the Multipöly Room windows in Vallila, Helsinki, and was initially presented as part of Coupling: Maarit Mustonen & Vlatka Horvat at PUBLICS, Helsinki in 2023 across the windows of Multipöly and PUBLICS.
