Vlatka Horvat: Echo Location
Swimming POOL Projects, Sofia, Bulgaria
part of Nine Elephants vol. 3
9 July 2026 – mid-September 2026

Echo Location is a solo show by Vlatka Hovat – the first presentation of her work in Bulgaria – which uses minimal sculptural intervention, text, and video to subvert and re-imagine the space of the Swimming Pool gallery and the city in which it sits.
In the installation Room/Rooms occupying the central space of the gallery, simple building materials are combined to create a low partial wall which, in echoing the walls and entrances of the gallery floorplan serves to divide, mirror, and problematise the space, playfully rendering it hard to use, while demanding that users take unexpected trajectories through the space.
For the outside terrace and the rooftop pool that gives the gallery its name, Horvat creates a second installation extending her impulse to mischievous spatial doubling. Deep End uses found mirrors of various shapes, sizes, and provenance arranged in the bottom of the drained pool, creating a fragmented reimagining of the absent water surface and its reflections, playing viewers back to themselves as disconnected fragments, encountered against the backdrop of reflections of the sky.
Back in the gallery, Ten Scores is a new series of instruction-based text works, functioning as interactive scores, which develop Horvat’s performative attention on the viewers themselves via a focus on their gazes, bodies, and relations to the architectural and urban space in which they encounter the work.
Rounding off the exhibition is Horvat’s 2021 video work Until the Last of Our Labours Is Done, a hallucinatory performance work in which a cast of five performers negotiate the landscape close to Horvat’s London home while pushing, rolling, dragging, or otherwise manipulating a cacophonous collection of found objects large and small, on a set of journeys without a clear endpoint.
